Winston the Whale is an Instagram account belonging to a well-known Portland artist by the same name that specializes in creating 3D tattoos. The body art designs feature two separate outlines done in a bright blue and red ink that sit one slightly higher than the other. The effect renders the designs an optical illusion -- especially if it is viewed when wearing 3D glasses.

The designs were first an experiment Winston the Whale tried out, unsure of how the 3D designs would translate onto the skin. The artwork opts for two tones and simplistic outlines of creatures, shapes and characters. While the designs are relatively simple, the use of two outlines to create a three dimensional effect is quite striking, and from far away the illustrations seem to pop out off of the body.
