With record-setting harvests this year, the maple-syrup industry has been making a concerted effort for the public to see it as more than just a producer of something sweet to add to pancakes. In order to introduce maple syrup as more than just a healthy natural sweetener, it is being presented as a savory flavoring agent. Sugar Bob’s Finest Kind, the producer of a dark maple syrup that's infused with hardwood smoke puts it best by saying: "At breakfast it can be a sweetener but for the rest of the day it’s a savory extender."

Rich maple flavors are now being worked into everything from cottage cheese to seasoning rubs and meaty bacon snacks for a savory twist on an ingredient that's typically only seen by the public as sweet.
