Biological Anthropologist Dr. Helen Fisher of Rutgers University discusses the findings of a study on the brain in love in which she and her team took MRIs of people in love, some of whom had just been dumped. Dr. Helen Fisher calls it a "study the madness of love," and details the motivation of the research as an effort to answer questions such as "why do we crave love so much?" and why humans have such a physical need for romance.

The MRIs showed activity in three regions of the brain: the reward system (for wanting, motivation, craving, and focus), where the brain becomes more active when it can't get what it wants; the system that calculates gains and losses and the area associated with deep attachment to another individual. Dr. Helen Fisher also discusses romantic love as an addiction, as it represents the three main features of addiction: tolerance, withdrawal, relapse.
