BABELstudio Creates the Aralar Cottage in the Forest

Architecture firm BABELstudio presents the completed Aralar Cottage, which is a cabin defined by black wooden details in the Basque Country. The cottage has a hinged side that opens up the interior to experience the forest naturally. It is surrounded by the lush areas of Sierra de Aralar, which is what the cabin is named after, and is designed for a couple based in Bilbao who are active hikers and fans of carpentry.

Michael Schmidt, studio director of BABELstudio explains to Dezeen, "The characteristic, classical image of the forest cabin refers to traditional storage buildings in the Aralar region and, in shape and size, to a characteristic, archetypal image of a gable-roofed hut. Not least this approach was driven by the local building regulations which do not allow any changes in the cubature."
