Studio Bua Created the Atelier Nyp on Once a Sheed Shed

The Atelier Nyp is a modern cabin built on the basis of a destroyed sheep shed designed by architecture firm Studio Bua. It is in the remote western area of Iceland and the structure is named after Nypurhyrna mountain behind the cabin. The Atelier Nyp is comprised of an artist's studio and a guest house.

One of the main focuses of the client's brief was to create new use of the remains of the existing sheep shed to reduce the amount of concrete used in the new building. The co-founder of Studio Bua Sigrún Sumarliðadóttir shared with Dezeen, "We approached the project from the point of view of sustainability and to maximise the existing resources, both material and cultural. We repurposed the concrete foundation from an existing sheep shed that had blown off in extremely bad weather, which in this part of the world is not uncommon."
