Modern innovations have taken some of the elitism out of caviar. A device with the tongue-in-cheek title 'Imperial Spherificator' allows gourmands to create caviar from almost any ingredient. Curious foodies have used it to make everything from edible meat pearls to tiny Sriracha pellets.

In other instances, caviar maintains its reputation of extreme indulgence in innovative new applications. La Prairie caviar skin care serum is sold in crystal goblets, with just 2.5 ounces of the sumptuous cream included in each container. Even a nail polish that mimics the texture of caviar is priced at $30 a bottle.

For the most part, though, caviar remains the snack of the super-wealthy. The gorgeous caviar lounge recently opened at the Hong Kong Ritz-Carlton is a testament to this fact.
