The WeChat 'WeLive' shop is one of the newest unstaffed retail locations in China, introducing a new way for consumers to shop. The pop-up shop uses the WeChat app and QR codes to register new users.
Once inside, shoppers are able to browse by four clearly defined categories: clothes, food, living and transport. When it comes time to make a purchase, consumers are able to stand in a designated payment zone, where merchandise is automatically recognized. To pay, those in the store may simply finish a transaction by opening WeChat Pay before leaving the store.
While it is crucial for many unstaffed stores to be app-integrated, many consumers cannot be bothered to downloading a standalone application. However, WeChat has already established itself in China as a multi-purpose social media mobile app that is already used by the majority of people in the country.
