Washable Sleeve Screens

NUS Weaves Touch Controls into a Sleeve Display

Researchers at the National University of Singapore built a sleeve display into fabric with electronic fibers that pair light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, with touch sensing, letting wearers tap clothing to view visuals and link with devices. Unlike wearables that fasten a screen onto the body, the prototype puts the interface inside the cloth while keeping it flexible and breathable.

Woven from 54 pixel fibers, the sleeve showed little change in brightness or touch response after 50 machine washes. Its touch layer sits under the light-up layer, so pressing the cloth completes a circuit and triggers the nearest pixel.

Fifty machine-wash cycles with little change make textile displays easier to imagine in clothing, where attached screens have struggled with care and comfort. Embedding touch and pixels in the fabric widens the role of garments as interfaces for health readings or environmental data, instead of leaving those tasks to a separate device.

Washable Textile Interfaces
Durable screen-woven fabrics create space for everyday clothing to become long-lasting digital surfaces without sacrificing comfort or care routines.
Touch-sensitive Apparel
Clothing with embedded touch controls signals new potential for discreet device interaction, health tracking, and contextual data access through natural gestures.
Fiber-based Displays
Pixel-level electronics woven directly into fibers point to lighter, more flexible display formats that could reduce reliance on rigid wearable hardware.

Sectors Adopting This

Wearable Technology
Integrated fabric displays expand the category beyond strapped-on devices by making garments themselves interactive, washable, and sensor-enabled.
Smart Textiles
Machine-washable electronic fibers strengthen the commercial case for connected fabrics in fashion, healthcare, sports, and occupational monitoring.
Consumer Electronics
Soft textile screens introduce alternative interface models where phones, accessories, and connected devices can extend controls onto apparel.
