Vuebuds Let Users Ask About Their Surroundings in Real Time

Vuebuds are the first camera-integrated wireless earbuds and a platform for visual intelligence with the potential to change how people interact with their immediate surroundings and AI in real time. Researchers at the University of Washington have developed a prototype system that integrates small cameras into standard wireless earbuds so that people can look at an object and ask artificial intelligence about it.

Within about a second, the system responds through the earbuds, offering a much more intuitive back-and-forth, especially when compared to smart glasses that have failed to reach a mainstream audience for the same purposes. To accommodate design challenges and privacy concerns, Vuebuds use low-resolution, black-and-white cameras to capture still images rather than continuous video, and on-device processing means that data does not need to reach the cloud.
