Toyota and Pepco Join Forces on a New Project

Toyota Motor North America and Pepco have announced a joint initiative to investigate vehicle-to-grid technology using the Toyota bZ4X battery electric vehicle. This collaboration aims to develop bidirectional power flow systems, enabling battery electric vehicle owners to both charge their vehicles and return power to the grid. If successful in this endeavour, Toyota and Pepco's vehicle-to-grid technology could enhance energy grid resilience and reliability, assist in integrating renewable energy sources, and potentially lower electricity costs.

Maryland, a state rapidly embracing electric vehicles, is the setting for this research. The study will be conducted at Pepco's Watershed Sustainability Center in Montgomery County. The collaboration between Toyota and Pepco will focus on understanding the charging habits and vehicle usage patterns of EV owners. Nearly 80% of EV owners currently charge their vehicles at home overnight, a period of lower energy demand.
