Social Media Fact-Checking Initiatives

Twitter Birdwatch Lets Volunteer Users Fact-Check Posts

Twitter has announced the expansion of its community-sourced fact-checking pilot 'Twitter Birdwatch.' Twitter previously selected a small amount of users to test its Birdwatch pilot, which is a system that lets users attach notes to a story or post.

These notes serve the purpose of providing proof for a post to determine whether a post is misinformation or valid. Then, other Birdwatch members can upvote and downvote notes that they see. When a note receives a certain amount of upvotes, it becomes visible to public users on Twitter. Additionally, if enough Birdwatchers flag a post as misinformation, the post will be handled by Twitter. This could involve hiding the post from the public or removing it from the platform.

Twitter is greatly expanding invites to its Birdwatch program in order to test the pilot at scale. With a small amount of testees, it is nearly impossible to cover every story published on the platform, so this newest test will help to further ensure the validity of posts on Twitter.
