Illness Acceptance Comics

These Comics Illuminate the Hypocrisy of How People Treat Mental Illness

The way employers, friends and family treat mental illness in our society is very different from the way we treat physical ailments -- and yet both can be just as serious impediments to work and life.

Buzzfeed illustrator Haejin Park created this series of insightful comics to compare how people treat physical illness versus how they treat mental illness. In the series of comics showcasing physical illness, bosses and friends demonstrate concern and understanding for the needs of someone suffering from a flu or an injury. In the way they treat mental illness, however, there is an apparent lack of compassion or credit given to the afflicted person. Others offer uninformed suggestions, blame and criticism in place of genuine care.
