The SoundYard is a Musical Instrument Installation in Belfast

The SoundYard is a large-scale mechanical instrument installed on Queen's Quay in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It is situated opposite the Titanic Belfast museum. Architects Eunan Deeney, Matthew Kernan, and Hannah Wilson created the five-meter-tall musical pavilion with a central oculus supported on 16 slim columns. Two concentrated sets of suspended rods hand from this central part, creating sound when activated.

To activate the SoundYard's music, which comprises 500 concentric metal rods, visitors can walk, run, and play under the structure to trigger motion sensors. Once triggered, the mechanical instrument's canopy rotates slowly, striking the hollow tubes. The music the SoundYard creates becomes louder as more people interact with it, encouraging the community to gather together and create some noise.
