Developed by a team led by Dr. Stuart English, the Sleep Mask is a revolutionary prototype that works using light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to effectively treat diabetic retinopathy, which can lead to sight loss in time.
Explaining the project and the benefits therein, Dr. English says, "The product we have developed with PolyPhotonix is a treatment for macular eye disease that is non-invasive, saving lots of money over existing treatments such as using lasers and injections into the eye." While still in development, the Sleep Mask is something of a godsend when compared against current projections regarding worldwide diabetes rates, which are set to go up a whopping 50% within the 2010 to 2030 year range.
