The Catcher Guesthouse Adapts Existing Village Houses near Shanghai

— January 20, 2026 — Art & Design
The Catcher Guesthouse is a renovation and extension project by architecture studio Team BLDG located near the rice fields of Xinchang town outside Shanghai. The project transforms two existing rural houses into a small guesthouse with 11 rooms alongside shared public spaces. New volumes are inserted at the corners of the rectangular site to connect indoor areas with courtyards and circulation routes. A perimeter wall defines the site boundary while allowing framed views toward surrounding fields. Inside, a sunken lobby seating area introduces daylight and visual connections to the garden, organising movement through the building.

The design retains much of the original structures while selectively upgrading materials and construction for safety and durability. Public functions such as a lobby, pavilion, and banquet space are arranged to support group use, while guest rooms are fitted with fixed furniture to manage cost and construction efficiency. Circulation is used as a primary organising element, linking old and new spaces across the site.
