Womb-Like Textile Experiences

Lucy McRae Develops a Cushioned Machine for Supportive Embraces

Sci-fi designer Lucy McRae has taken the world by storm with a plethora of textile experiences that bring together machine aesthetics and the human need for connection. Most recently, the artist revealed 'Heavy Duty Love' at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2021.

The textile experience is decisevely "womb-like" as the Los Angeles-based designer seeks to "compensate for a lack of human contact in early life, which could become a reality in the near future." Strikingly progressive and forward-thinking, McRae's work explores the future intricacy of human existence as shaped by the digital age. The designer has shred that she "[is] envisioning a new generation of children having radically different formative years, developing new types of sensitivities and neurobiological quirks." Whether they will find space for human intimacy and connection is something McRae is trying to answer herself.
