San Francisco's mayor Gavin Newsom announced that 1100 new solar powered bus stops will be installed by 2013.
The red solar panels on top of the bus shelters generate energy for intercoms, LED lighting and wireless routers that will help in making the city WiFi friendly.
The bus shelters will have push-button ready information and will be made from 75% recycled materials.
Implications - When it comes to shifting towards a greener lifestyle, public transportation is often a main subject due to the pollution large buses can create. Thus, transit is taking it a step further by integrating solar-powered stations promoting a friendlier image for the eco-conscious commuter. Public transportation systems worldwide should look into this idea as a way to continue serving the eco-conscious consumer.
