The Sobremesa House by Studio McW renovates a Victorian terrace into a sophisticated home for hosting and family life. Located in South West London and owned by the founders of Opus 11 catering, the 275 m² interior was stripped of its bedsit past and transformed into a generous, flowing space focused on light, comfort, and conviviality. A sweeping brick extension folds outward to connect garden and interior, while a central courtyard and curved skylight illuminate a refined open-plan zone for social gatherings. “The goal was to create a sense of continuity and cohesion throughout the house, with elements of surprise dotted throughout,” says director Greg Walton.
On the ground floor, the bespoke smoked-oak and marble kitchen anchors the design, with integrated joinery framed by arching niches and flowing curves. Upstairs, a double-height stair void with soft-edged plaster, a loft guest suite, and a dramatic walk-in wardrobe complete a layered, tactile home. Sobremesa House successfully balances heritage features, like a grand spiral staircase and bay windows, with contemporary spatial comfort designed for modern living and entertaining.
