Leaving an abusive relationship can be dangerous and difficult but Shelter Movers is hoping to help victims easily pack up and escape these situations. Founded by Marc Hull-Jaquin, Shelter Movers was founded on the idea that a free moving service can make leaving abusers easier.
While Shelter Movers is available to anyone fleeing abuse, the service is generally called by women's shelters in Ottawa. According to Jaquin, "the value I think Shelter Movers brings — that they have a chance to keep their stuff — and that's one less thing to worry about." The work done by this organization ensures that victims do not have to confront their abusers, or flee in distress, while still keeping all of their possessions.
Before retrieving any possessions, Shelter Movers gathers information about each case and then coordinates with police, private security, storage companies and veterinarians if necessary.
