Shark fin soup is a controversial dish that is served as a luxurious, special occasion menu item in Chinese culture.
In celebration of the San Francisco Vegetarian Society's 50th anniversary and the arrival of the Year of the Dog, the Enjoy Vegetarian Restaurant in California is hosting a special Chinese New Year banquet. The event's menu includes a "Veggie Shark Fin Soup" that reimagines the luxury soup once reserved for Chinese royalty. At the vegetarian banquet, diners will also be treated to steamed dumplings, stir-fried pea sprouts, bean curd rolls and more.
Now that a number of basic meats have been successfully reimagined as meat-free alternatives, innovators are now creating cruelty-free, sustainable and plant-based versions of controversial, luxury animal-based delicacies.
