'Le Roc Canteen' is unlike another other school canteen in France. Designed to appeal to children and adults alike, the unusual schoolhouse structure resembles a treehouse crossed with a brick cave.
The studio D'Houndt+Bajart created the unique structure after being asked to create a dining facility for the local school and kindergarten. The design is intended to resemble a treehouse so its main volume is elevated to the first-floor level. Underneath the structure there are a number of white tree-like columns that appear to be holding the building up. The outside is then covered with a rocky texture that gives the building a cave-like quality. The designers intentionally gave the outside an uneven profile to reproduce the same cracks and edges as natural rock.
While the design may be unusual for a school canteen, this unique cave-like structure has delighted local children and their parents.
