This informative and perspective-shifting project by Nadeem Haidary places art and statistics in the same realm with re-imagined flags that display infographics about their corresponding countries.
While she has designed the flags of many different countries, the focal point of the artist's latest project is the American flag. Instead of the stars and stripes representing states and original colonies, each star signifies a year in history while the stripes represent corresponding statistics of things like divorce rates and life expectancy. Most of the topics shown are similarly somber or negative in the hopes that these re-imagined flags will spark discourse over issues that aren't often discussed.
The 'State of the Union' project aims to change the static way people look at flags and spark conversations about important topics that may go against typical national pride.
