New York-based sculptor Raul De Lara grabs the attention of visitors with the new Raíces/Roots installation. It is his debut solo museum exhibition and it can be seen at the Savannah College of Art and Design for its 16th edition of SCAD deFINE ART, which is the school's series of exhibitions that takes place once a year.
The artist leverages his Mexican heritage and nods to history with the artwork. The pieces are a blend of craft, camp, and uncanny notions. For example, the Jewel Box citrines as he nods to his heritage after a recent tripe to Sinaloa, Mexico, where his childhood home is. After 20 years of being in the United States, it was a long-awaited visit.
