Culturally Artful Textile Exhibitions

Paolo Arao Introduces the Solo Devotion Exhibition

Filipino-American artist Paolo Arao introduces a look at the Devotion exhibition which is showcased currently at the David B/ Smith Gallery. It highlights the idea of a meaningful creative practice that is fuelled by personal conviction, craft, and more. Arao explores this concept through new textile artwork that is further joined by collaborative totem structures.

Viewers follow through the space carefully as there are intricate lines that are similar to reading sheet music. Arao notes, “For me, the most direct link to musicality and textiles comes through the instruments used to create music and cloth. The loom is like a piano. And I think of weaving as a way of making threads sing. There is a somatic rhythm to weaving on a loom that feels connected to playing music on a piano.”
