Vertical Launch Professional Drones

The 'Tern' Drone Launches Vertically on Aircraft Carriers

Aiming to help create professional drones suitable for use by the Navy, the 'Tern' is a new development by Northrop Grumman that aims to help be a versatile piece of equipment.

Instead of requiring ample space in order to takeoff and land, the 'Tern' drone features a design that would enable it to launch and land vertically. The drone would be able to switch positions after launch, but this capability to launch vertically helps to save space and make the unit more versatile for use on aircraft carriers.

The 'Tern' professional drones are currently in development with the UAVs set for a full demonstration starting in 2018. The 'Tern' program is being conducted by the US Navy's Office of Naval Research and DARPA.
