Umbrella-Roofed Shopping Malls

This Portugal Shopping Mall is Decorated with Hundreds of Umbrellas

As part of Portugal's Agitagueda art festival, a popular shopping mall was decorated with hundreds of colorful umbrellas. The umbrellas were suspended from the roof to achieve a floating effect. Their bold hues and translucent fabric caused the sunlight streaming through the skylight to take on a dreamlike shade of blue, green, pink, red or orange.

This umbrella installation is a wonderful display of whimsical art combined with childlike fantasies; it's almost as if Mary Poppins had created this exhibit as a child. Photographs of patrons show them walking among the umbrellas while looking up and gazing in disbelief at the floating rainbow just above them.

Oftentimes public art can be a nuisance, requiring pedestrians to walk around the installation or otherwise inconveniencing them but this Portugal shopping mall figured out that public art is a lot more lovable when it's taken to the sky.
