Captivating Viewpoint-Integrated Exhibitions

MVRDV Designs the Portlantis Exhibition Center

Dutch design firm MVRDV designs the Portlantis exhibition center which functions as a viewing tower that overlooks the port of Rotterdam. The structure is made to be a 'beacon' for the space and it is defined by its twisting staircases adorned in a bright red color at the middle which connects visitors to the beach-front entrance. There is also a rooftop terrace that leads to the lookout.

The co-founder of the studio, Winy Mass speaks about the design, noting "Portlantis is a beacon, it's eye-catching, but it's also a kind of watchtower. When you live in Rotterdam, the port sits on the horizon – it's 'over there' and many people don't really know what goes on there. Portlantis gives people a way to investigate, to see how things are changing in the port, how that relates to the city, and how it affects the life they live in the city."
