Lighthouse-Resembling Urban Buildings

Safdir Architecture Designs the Old Port Square in Portland

Boston architecture firm Safdie Architects has designed the Old Port Square development on four acres of the historic Old Port area. The renderings of the design showcase the tower complete with layered panels topped with a timber build that plays outwards. The upper volume is wrapped in glazing which honors the lighthouse beacon as noted by the studio.

Safdie Architects founding partner Moshe Safdie states, "Portland is a city with a powerful history and heritage. [...] The project's breakthrough was the day we latched onto the idea that this is a beacon. It's a lighthouse in the tradition of the lighthouses of Portland, those slender, beautiful structures that rise out of the land or out of the water, that become icons in the landscape for good purpose."
