Porcelain Chairs by Sam Durant are Inspired by Classic Plastic Seats

The Porcelain Chairs by Sam Durant, a designer based in Los Angeles, may seem a little deceiving at first. This is because they happen to look just like the common plastic chairs often dotting American lawns in the summer. Of course, they were inspired by those very same chairs. Yet instead of focusing on their purely practical existence, this furniture series has elevated them in the design sphere.

Created after being invited to a sculpture event in China that was unceremoniously canceled, the Porcelain Chairs by Sam Durant were crafted in collaboration with Chinese craftsmen at the Jiao Zhi studio in Xiamen. Comprised of colorful, one-off creations, the collection is striking. Durant writes, "I have always found them fascinating. A great combination of utility and economy."
