'Shoppers' is an appropriately-named photo series, captured by London-based photographer Matthew Murray, that consists of photos of shoppers in the Bristol's Galleries Shopping Mall. Murray set up a temporary studio in the mall and invited the most intriguing characters in the mall to pose for brief portrait sessions. Murray then asked his subjects for a brief explanation of their trip to the mall, unearthing in the process both everyday mundane responses as well as unexpected gems.
These photos of shoppers ably put together a portrait of capitalist culture that is at once problematic and sympathetic. Some of the subjects enter the mall to find a specific object that is indispensable to their daily lives. Others rather use the mall as a distraction from their daily lives.
