Proposed for erection in Eltahrir Square, the Phantom Limbs monument is meant to celebrate the enormous efforts and the great success of the people of Egypt in their struggle to overthrow Mubarak's dictatorship. Architect Ehab Ghali strove to symbolize this great social union in the form of a colossal sphere. The rough-surfaced mass of material represents a large group of everyday citizens turned activists and the way that they all came together for such a formidable cause.
The abstract architectural language communicates societal change through solids and voids in the structure. The plaza approach morphs into a mountainous topography that functions as a pedestal for the central and rather celestial object. Despite Phantom Limbs' solid body, it's meant to represent growth and fluctuation and would rely on digital effects to animate it.
