Openspace Architecture coastal house is a single-storey residence located along the Saanich Inlet on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The home is organised as a gently curving plan that weaves between mature trees, allowing the structure to sit within the existing forest canopy rather than replace it. Living spaces are oriented toward views of the inlet while maintaining close visual contact with the surrounding woodland. Deep roof overhangs and a low horizontal profile respond to the region’s coastal climate and heavy rainfall. Western red cedar is used across exterior cladding, interior ceilings, and structural elements, selected for its ability to weather naturally and develop a silvered finish over time.
Large glazed openings connect interior rooms to outdoor terraces, reinforcing continuity between inside and landscape. Stone flooring extends from living spaces to exterior paths, grounding the architecture within its coastal setting. A central courtyard separates the main residence from a guest pavilion and introduces a reflective water feature. Landscape design by Paul Sangha Creative uses native planting to transition gradually from architecture to forest edge.
