In efforts to reduce air pollution, and improve the city's "long term sustainability, Mayor Michael Bloomberg set a goal to plant 1 million new trees by the year 2017. Each year for the next 10 years, the city "will plant 23,000 trees along city streets and any other "place where it is possible to plant a street tree."
Implications - City citizens are looking to find oasis within their urban environment, rather than having to go to cottages or the countryside. As deforestation becomes an imminent threat to human livelihood and pollution, efforts to incorporate trees into urban planning are becoming more important. Furthermore, trees and other nature-inspired designs fit into home decor, fashion, technology and other industries.
