Minimalist Retail Stores

MUJI Harvard Square is a Renovated Lifestyle Retail Store in Cambridge

The MUJI Harvard Square transforms the historic Design Research building into a four-level lifestyle retail destination designed by Mapos Architects in collaboration with ACTWO Architects. Completed in just 10 weeks, the renovation preserves the building's Brutalist character by exposing its original concrete columns, masonry walls, floating staircases, brick flooring, and expansive glass curtain walls. Locally sourced heart pine accents, upgraded lighting, and MUJI's restrained palette of white, gray, green, and signature red complement the restored architectural features while reflecting the brand's minimalist aesthetic.

Spanning 12,000 square feet, the store supports MUJI's expansion beyond stationery into a broader lifestyle retail concept with home goods, apparel, and everyday essentials displayed across an open-plan layout. Large storefront windows visually connect the interior with Harvard Square, while a top-floor café featuring a robot barista introduces a hospitality-focused destination for visitors.
