Barbara Kruger's the History of Tears Covers a Paris Rotunda

Barbara Kruger turned the Bourse de Commerce rotunda in Paris into a room-sized work that lets visitors read with their bodies as much as their eyes. Her installation, The History of Tears, spreads black, white and red language across Tadao Ando's concrete cylinder, then continues onto the floor and into 24 display cases in the surrounding passage.

At the center, two huge white ovals bend around the wall, one in French and one in English, each led by a red address to the viewer. Underfoot, a line from George Orwell's 1984 is scaled so large that people cross the letters inside the room and only grasp the sentence from the levels above.

For visitors, this means seeing becomes part of the subject rather than a detached activity. The rotunda asks them to move, look down, and rethink the role of a paying audience inside an artwork.
