Community Market Spaces

Mercado Nicolás Bravo by AIDIA STUDIO Creates a Hub for Artisans in Mexico

The Mercado Nicolás Bravo by AIDIA STUDIO is a new crafts market in Nicolás Bravo, Quintana Roo, designed to connect local artisans with visitors traveling through the Yucatán Peninsula. Covering 7,700 square metres, the project includes fifty stalls arranged on a grid, with two open courtyards that bring air and light into the plan. A sweeping roof of inverted umbrella vaults allows natural ventilation and shade, turning the marketplace into a comfortable and climate-responsive structure.

Materials such as steel, pigmented reinforced concrete, clay bricks, and local blocks were selected for resilience and minimal maintenance. Beyond commerce, the market also acts as a community centre, offering space for workshops, cultural events, and local food production. By combining biophilic form with architectural clarity, the project demonstrates how market design can support economic opportunity while serving as a civic and social anchor.
