Victorian Home Modular Extensions

The Meadow Road Extension Redesigns a Villa with Sustainability

The Meadow Road extension by Studio Bark transforms a neglected Victorian villa in Tunbridge Wells into a daylight-rich, energy-efficient family home. A modular timber rear wing, assembled using Studio Bark’s U‑Build system, adds 50 m² of new space including a kitchen-diner, utility room, pantry, and side entrance. Rather than masking the old building, the design highlights its original brick and sash windows beside fresh cork-clad timber façades. A triple-height atrium, lit from above, now serves as a connective volume that draws light deep into both new and existing spaces.

Inside, the updated layout supports modern family life. Two children’s bedrooms occupy the new addition, offering a cozy, treehouse-like feel, while the original structure contains living and social zones. Natural materials like spruce plywood and cork create a sense of warmth, while restored Victorian details maintain the home’s character. Energy use has dropped by 75 percent, thanks to passive design, air-source heating, and mechanical ventilation.
