Tape Deck Instruments

Magnetic Folklore is a performance project where musicians repurpose aging cassette and reel-to-reel machines as playable sound instruments. The setup treats magnetic tape as both source material and performance medium, with artists manipulating speed, tension, and direction through hand control or custom mechanical arms. One instrument pairs a reel-to-reel deck with a bamboo bow so the performer can draw the tape across the heads, creating shifting tones shaped by friction and tape movement. The tape decks remain fully mechanical, and their motors, rollers and heads become active parts of the sound, producing textures that blend recorded fragments with machine noise.

The performances rely on the irregularities of the equipment, using wobble, tape wear, and motor variation as expressive elements. Musicians interact directly with the machines to form evolving sound layers that cannot be replicated digitally. The project repositions outdated audio technology as a living tool for experimental composition, turning discarded devices into instruments that generate unpredictable, tactile sonic results.
