Machine Hallucination by Refik Anadol Visualizes an AI's "Dreams"

Machine Hallucination by Refik Anadol is an installation that's now open in New York City, offering a unique way for people to experience just big data like never before. Although terms like "machine learning" and "neural networks" are becoming more familiar, this experience has the potential to help people gain a better understanding of artificial intelligence systems.

As an artist, Anadol is passionate about working with data and for this project, sought to "make visible the actual process of an algorithm taking in and responding to images." Working with hundreds of millions of images of New York City, an image algorithm erased identifiable traces of people in the images for the sake of privacy but also allowing the focus of Machine Hallucination to be on the city itself.
