Locked AI Chat Folders

OpenAI Lets ChatGPT Users Lock Sensitive Chats with a PIN or Face ID

OpenAI added a way to lock individual ChatGPT conversations so sensitive exchanges stay private when someone else is using the same device. The feature secures those chats with a four-digit PIN or with Face ID or Touch ID on supported devices.

'Locked Chats' appear in a separate section from the regular chat list, pinned threads, and search results, and users can return to them later. With Memory enabled, the locked section keeps its own shared memory, so new details stay within that space instead of spreading into regular chats.

As people use ChatGPT for both personal planning and work, that separation makes the app easier to hand over without exposing everything in the account. Rolling it out across ChatGPT's plan tiers extends privacy controls beyond paid users, while the lack of end-to-end encryption keeps the feature focused on access control instead of full message security.

Private AI Workspaces
Separate locked areas for AI conversations create opportunities for context-specific privacy layers that support personal, professional, and shared-device use cases.
Biometric Chat Security
Face ID, Touch ID, and PIN-based access point to new authentication models for protecting sensitive AI interactions without complicating everyday app usage.
Segmented AI Memory
Isolated memory within locked chats suggests a future where AI systems manage multiple identity contexts while reducing unwanted data crossover.

Who This Affects Most

Artificial Intelligence
Consumer AI platforms can differentiate through privacy-centered interface design that gives users more control over sensitive conversational histories.
Cybersecurity
Access-control tools for AI applications expand the market for lightweight privacy safeguards that sit between basic login protection and full encryption.
Productivity Software
Work and planning apps gain new relevance from private AI compartments that make collaborative or shared-device environments safer for mixed-use workflows.
