Michael Kenna's Kussharo Lake Tree images track the historic development of a Japanese Oak situated near Japan's Kussharo Lake. The photographer documented the specific tree over the course of seven years, inviting viewers to take in its progression and growth during the extensive time period.

Much as the pictures let on, this particular Japan-based tree is captivating for a number of reasons. In addition to Kenna's use of a somber, black and white finish, the arboreal structure is enthralling in its own right given its sideways tilt.

While many artists focus on the near perfect beauty of upright trees, Kenna has proven that there is much charm within imperfect trunks and branches. It is the quirks of this Japanese Oak that provide it with a great deal of character.
