The KFC World Cup Campaign Parodies Lionel Messi's Iconic Photo

The KFC World Cup campaign reimagines the widely shared 2007 photograph of Lionel Messi bathing baby Lamine Yamal by replacing Messi with Colonel Sanders and transforming Yamal into a miniature Ronald McDonald. Shared ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, the social media post was captioned "Y'all my sons fr," extending the parody into a playful jab at rival fast-food chain McDonald's. The campaign coincided with renewed attention surrounding the original image as Spain and Argentina prepared to meet in the tournament's final.

The photograph was originally taken by Joan Monfort for a UNICEF charity calendar organized by Spanish newspaper Sport before resurfacing during UEFA Euro 2024. KFC's use of Ronald McDonald also referenced Yamal's appearance in McDonald's FIFA World Cup 26 campaign alongside David Beckham, Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry, and Son Heung-min.
