Squarespace's John Malkovich ad shows the importance of authenticity in commercials. The hilarious Super Bowl spot, entitled 'Calling JohnMalkovich.com,' is already the winner of an Emmy for Outstanding Commerican in 2017, and has accrued over three million views on YouTube. The ad features the prolific actor, and places him in a difficult situation of trying to secure a web address for his burgeoning fashion site. The ad has Malkovich stretch his acting chops as he expresses anger and disbelief in the ordeal he is faced with.
There is a simple hilarity associated with the ad, as it comes off in an organic and natural way. This is due in part to the acting ability of Malkovich, but comes more from the authenticity of the story. Squarespace's John Malkovich ad was not a story cobbled together by an ad agency, but instead came from the reality of the situation. Malkovich did actually want to start a fashion line and was not able to get the domain name JohnMalkovich.com. When Squarespace found out about this, the ad practically wrote itself and came out as a hilarious masterpiece. After the advertisement, Squarespace did set up JohnMalkovich.com for the actor to start his fashion line.
