Feral Painted Worlds

The Haunting Works of Artist Joao Ruas

Brazilian artist and illustrator Joao Ruas paints strange and haunting scenarios laden with emotion and atmosphere. Ruas studied in London from 2004-2007 before returning to his native Sao Paulo. His characters are mostly children and animals or human-animal hyprids with nuanced expressions, seemingly floating through a feral world.

The images can come across as disturbing, but there is not a sense of fear in the subjects. The textures used by Joao Ruas are impeccable and precise and the color palette is dark and muted. Check out images of Ruas’ art above.
