German retailer METRO has launched the first in-store farm concept inside one of the brand's stores in Berlin. Located inside the METRO location in Berlin's Friedrichshain neighborhood, the impressive system was designed by high-tech agriculture firm Infarm and is officially titled 'Kräuter Garten.'
The Kräuter Garten system is a tiny glass unit that can grow custom herbs and produce for consumers on demand. Given that the hydroponic system does not require pesticides, all of the produce grown in the unit is 100% organic and is said to taste better than comparative alternatives.
The innovative system is the first occasion of a hydroponic system being employed in a grocery retail concept. A juice bar in London grows much of its produce in-store using a similar system.
