Vistasys' RFID wine information kiosk was in development for eight years before the concept fully came to fruition. The system is deceptively simple, yet it's a valuable tool that retailers are now tapping into to boost sales. To use the system, a consumer must place a tagged bottle on a table that's set up with a reader. Beside it, a display reveals information about a wine. This unit has proven itself to be valuable for answering consumer questions.
While there are plenty of units out there that can provide consumers with information after a barcode is scanned, Vistasys' Reto Wittmer remarks that "the barcode is boring" and RFID technology was chosen to be integrated into this system for its theatrical qualities.
To make use of the technology, retailers pay Vistasys a small fee for providing the information service based on how often information is requested through the system. Beyond being of benefit to wine store owners, the display also offers value to wholesalers and vintners as well.
