2m26 Designs the Hitsujigoya with a Purple Iris Topping

— April 19, 2025 — Art & Design
Local architectural firm 2m26 has designed the Hitsujigoya, which is a Japanese translation of sheep pen. The wooden hut is made as a gatehouse that separates the male and female sheep in the field. The firm provides covered sleeping areas on both sides. It is defined by purple iris flowers along the thatched roof, which covers the timber sheep pen located in Kyoto, Japan.

2m26 founders Mélanie Heresbach and Sébastien Renauld told Dezeen, "In order to be able to separate land in half we designed a huge door, which also fit within the farm's land rules, as it is not possible to build a proper room with four walls. Because this land is accessible only by foot, we wanted a building which would go back to the earth if humans stopped maintaining it. All the materials we use come from land itself (stone, wood, straw, bark, bamboo), except the hinge, which we ordered from our favourite blacksmith."
