Zinc-Clad Retreats

Grianan is a Modest Zinc-Clad Retreat Designed by Cameron Webster Architects

Grianan is a modest zinc-clad retreat designed by Cameron Webster Architects in rural Stirlingshire, Scotland. The single-storey building was commissioned by jewellery designers Neil Smith and Wesley Zwiep as a compact home closely connected to its surrounding garden and landscape. The site was developed from an overgrown field into a cultivated garden planted with multiple varieties of birch and Japanese maple, shaping the orientation and placement of the building.

The retreat is organised as a two-bedroom residence with a simple plan that prioritises views, daylight and direct access to the garden. Zinc cladding is used across the exterior to provide durability and weather resistance while maintaining a restrained visual presence. Interior spaces are arranged to maintain a clear relationship between living areas and the landscape, using a limited material palette and straightforward construction to support everyday use and long-term performance.
