Cut Out Community Centers

The Grandola Meeting Center Features Sculptural Cut Out Recesses

The Grandola Meeting Center, located in the small Portuguese town of the same name, features an interesting design that helps it to stand out as a place for community among the otherwise private abodes that surround the building. From a distance, the architecture might look like little more than a stark white rectangular prism, but moving closer, the irregular recessions impacted into the outer walls can be seen, giving the Grandola Meeting Center the look of a puzzle with pieces missing and encouraging community members to come fill it in.

The Grandola Meeting Center was created by Portuguese architects Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus, and it serves the community of Alentejo in Grandola. The small town is about an hour's drive outside of Lisbon.

The building itself contrasts against the houses and buildings that surround it, with a pure white that juxtaposes with the stone and terra cotta of the traditional edifices.
