Large Archeological Museum Complex

The Grand Egyptian Museum Prepares to Open its Doors

GEM, otherwise known as the Grand Egyptian Museum has been in design and development for the past two decades and is about ready to finally open its doors. It is going to be the largest archeological museum complex across the globe. The concept first came into fruition when the Egyptian government ordered a contest to see who could design the best structure that is able to house precious treasures that are centuries old and fragile.

This project was later handed over to the Irish design studio Heneghan Peng Architects back in 2003. As it reaches completion, the building will take over 5.2 million square feet of land, located right outside of Cairo along the west bank area of the Nile River.
